Description: | 2008 T610 Chartham area second addenda, KentREPORT TO HM CORONERCircumstances of discoveryFive Iron Age coins were recovered by metal-detector users Mr. David Villanueva and Mrs. Carol Smith near Chartham, Kent between the 22nd September and 5th October 2008. The coins were reported to the coroner and Finds Liaison Officer in October, and brought to the British Museum in November 2008. A further three Iron Age coins were found and reported to the Finds Liaison Officer in December 2008 and brought to the British Museum in March 2009. A ninth coin was found on 26th February 2009 and brought to the British Museum in May 2009.The metal detectorists were working in association with Kent Archaeological Projects carrying out a survey of the site in advance of pipeline construction. The coins were found in the same field as seven Iron Age gold Gallo-Belgic E staters found in 1999-2000 and declared Treasure (one of these was later disclaimed as it was the first, single find); and two further coins of the same type found in 2000, declared Treasure in 2001 under the Treasure Act 1996.The CoinsThe coins consist of nine gold staters. The coins are Gallo-Belgic E type, which were probably struck in Gaul and imported into Britain in about 60 to 50 BC.1. They are more than 300 years old and the find comprises more than two coins with precious metal content in excess of the 10% threshold. It is probable that they were part of the group of coins of the same type from the same site declared Treasure in 2000 and 2001; this find should therefore be considered a second addendum to the 1999-2000 find.ConclusionI would conclude that the present coins should be regarded as a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).Eleanor Ghey and Ian Leins Department of Coins and MedalsThe British Museum06 June 2009 Amended (CCI numbers added) 03 June 2010 | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
