Five of the larger fragments (number 1-5) may have come from one rapier while fragments number 6 and 7 may be part of the centre and hilt of a second rapier blade. The smaller fragments (numbers 8-42) appear to represent parts of hilt (number 8 & 9), blade and midrib (number 27) of similar weaponsMost fragments are green/grey except fragment number 7 which is red brown colour and all the surfaces are matt with wear corrosion and soil except for the small fragment (number 32) which is smooth and shiny on one face. Whilst hoards containing rapiers or dirks are relatively rare, they have been found by metal detector and recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme (accessed 7.4.09). For example, three Middle Bronze Age dirk fragments were found at Maulden in Bedfordshire (Portable Antiquity Finds number WAW-793C86, Treasure case 2006/T0260). The hoard had been scattered from their original deposition context by repeated ploughing. Conclusion These fragments fulfil the requirements for being considered Treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act (2002 Amendment).
