Description: | A hoard of Roman denarii, deposited in the 3rd century. At present, the hoard consists of individual coins and those corroded together by a copper alloy. There are at least 91 coins, and the copper corrosion products suggest that the hoard was deposited in a bronze vessel. All of the coins are Roman silver coins of a denomination known as the denarius (plural denarii). The latest coin is a denarius of Julia Mamaea dating to AD 227 and the earliest identified coins are denarii from the reign of Vespasian (AD 69-79). Coins from the first century AD commonly circulated into the early third century. The coins can be summarised as follows:SummaryVespasian (AD 69-79) 7Trajan (AD 98-117) 1Hadrian (AD 117-38) 2Antoninus Pius (AD 138-61) 6Faustina I 3Faustina II 1Marcus Aurelius Caesar 4Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180)Lucilla 1Diva Faustina II 1 Commodus (AD 180-192) 1Wars of the Succession (AD 193-7): Clodius Albinus 1Septimius Severus 17Julia Domna 1Caracalla 2Joint reign of Severus & Caracalla (AD 198-209)Septimius Severus 10Julia Domna 10Geta 2Joint reign of Severus, Caracalla & Geta (AD 198-211):Caracalla 1Elagabalus (AD 218-222) 12Julia Maesa 4Julia Soaemias 2Severus Alexander (AD 222-235) 8Julia Mamaea 1Unidentified 1Total 99Metal Content and AgeThe coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to age, quantity and metal content. They are certainly more than 300 years old and all have precious metal contents far in excess of the 10% threshold.Same find? The coins in this find could have circulated together in the early third century AD. The fact that they were found together and the composition of the group suggests that, on balance of probability, they are likely to have been buried at the same time in antiquity.
