Description: | Leg from a cast copper alloy Medieval or post-Medieval cooking vessel. The leg is roughly trapezoidal in section, widening at the base to form a foot. There are three, vertical, raised ridges running down the inner face of both the leg and foot. The foot projects inwards slightly and its base is concave and angled. The metal is greenish-brown in colour and very eroded. Butler and Green (2003, p.15) write that '...there is evidence that metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. They then remained popular until the 18th and 19th centuries. However, they began to change in form around the end of the 17th century, with legs becoming much simpler in design than this one (ibid. 2003, p.27).
