Description: | Copper-alloy seal matrix. The die is circular and measures 20 mm in diameter. On the reverse the matrix is hexagonally facetted and rises to a broken-off conical handle. The die is deeply and neatly engraved. The central motif is a sleeping lion seen from above, with a tufted tail curled round, a three-toed paw, a rounded muzzle and a mane down the neck. In the centre is a dot which may have been used for laying out the rings around the inscription. The inscription reads *S' MICHAELII PREST (Seal of Michael Prest). The sleeping lion is a fairly common motif on 14th-century seals, but it is generally coupled with the inscription 'wake me no man' or similar. It is unusual to find a personal name on a 14th-century seal matrix. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1300
