Description: | Complete cast copper alloy seal martrix of Medieval date, probably thirteenth or fourteenth century (AD 1200 - AD 1400). Length 31mm, maximum width 19.4mm and maximum thickness 9mm. Weight 8.19g. The seal is flat and in plan, it is pointed oval. Viewing an impression of the die, it depicts a standing Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus to her left. There is an initial mark at the top in the form of a six pointed star. An inscription, without stop marks, reads from the top in a clockwise direction: MATER DEI MEMENTO MEI (Mother of God, remember me). The reverse of the seal is plain and has a central rib which tapers from the top towards the bottom where it becomes indistinct. Above the rib is an integral suspension lug with a circular perforation to form a loop. The perforation is about 2mm in diameter and the lug is bevelled either side of its longitudinal centre-line. The seal has the remains of a dark green patina within the matrix. However, most of the surfaces are corroded and small patches of bright green copper carbonate are present. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1200
