Description: | A copper-alloy 14th century medieval seal matrix of 'chess pawn' type. Measuring 24mm in height with a circular die measuring c18mm in diameter. There is a trefoil suspension loop with a circular hole through its centre. Where the loop joins the shaft there is a transverse moulding. The shaft has a hexagonal cross-section. The die has a central side profile cockeral or hen in its centre which is walking left. Around this there is a border inscription which begins with a six pointed star initial mark and reads CROV ME DAI. This appears to be English and means, 'Crow my day' it is therefore likely to be a crowing Cockeral depicted in the centre of the die rather than a hen. No parallel seal matrix with this inscription could be found. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1300
