Description: | Very small circular seal; the impression was made in copper-alloy and although most of the original surface remains, the sides of the seal are affected by bronze disease. While the back of the seal only bears thin crude parallel grooves, the front has the imprint of the seal matrix: The centre piece is the 'Lamb of God' (Agnus Dei), while there is an inscription in Lombardic lettering set around the Agnus Dei (between two concentric circles). The inscription is very difficult to decipher, but the last lettering might have been 'AGNUS DEI'
The size and shape of the artefact and the material it was made from suggest an alternative explanation - it could also have been a late 15th coin weight for foreign(?) coins. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1300
