Description: | Complete lead personal seal martrix of Medieval date, probably thirteenth or fourteenth century (AD 1200 - AD 1400). Length 29mm, maximum width 16.5mm and maximum thickness 12mm. Weight 11.52g. The seal is flat and pointed oval in plan. Viewing an impression of the die, it depicts a crudely inscribed downward pointing sprig or branch within an inscribed pointed oval which is concentric with the edge of the seal. Due to corrosion and the poorly executed letters, the inscription is difficult to read. At the top of the seal is an initial mark in the form of a cross potent. Reading in a clockwise direction, the intelligible part of the inscription reads: S? ..IOHIS : ?E. The reverse has a particularly large suspension loop at the top which is intact but has been bent over to one side. Along the longitudinal centre of the reverse is a low flat rib. The seal is corroded and in poor condition. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1200
