Description: | A complete worn copper-alloy trade weight, circular in shape measuring 41.5mm in diameter and 26.05g in weight. The front face of this weight has two concentric circular grooves and a central circular indenatation.
Between the two concentric grooves there is a crowned lombardic letter 'H.' It is this crowned lombardic 'H' which allows this weight to be dated as at the end of the 15th century, in the reign of Henry VII, a new attempt at standarisation was made, and it was ordered that weights agreeing with the local standards issued at this time should be stamped with the letter 'H' in lombardic style, surmounted by a crown. There are several varieties of this mark and it is fairly certain that its use continued into the reign of Henry VIII similar examples can be seen in Biggs (1993, 48-49). | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1495
