Description: | Medieval cast copper alloy hanger. The hanger originally would have had three lower arms extending from the base of a central stem. The stem terminates in a large, sub-circular suspension loop. Only one of the hanger arms survives; it is rectangular in section, and it ends in a sub-circular terminal with a small central hole. There are worn breaks where the other arms would have originally been attached; their original size and shape would have been the same as the surviving arm. The total surviving length of the hanger is 34.17mm, and it has a maximum surviving width of 31.48mm. The hanger is a dull grey-brown colour.
It is most likely that this form of hanger would have been used to suspend a glass or ceramic lamp from the ceiling. The holes in the arms would probably have originally been attached to chains that supported the lamp. Similar examples can be seen in Egan 1988, p131 and PAS record NARC-C162C5. If the hanger was used to suspend a lamp, it most likely dates from the 14th to early 15th century. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1300
