Description: | Incomplete two piece horse snaffle bit with jointed links. Cast in copper alloy, this harness fitting dates to the 1st century AD. The snaffle is comprised of two joined parts, each with a rein link, joining bar and jointed link. The bit would have been placed in a horses mouth, with the two projecting links being attached to the rein. Both of these links are broken, one is completely missing while half the other survives, with an aproximate diameter of 24mm. Both these breaks are worn, thus probably occured in antiquity. The jointed links are still connected, each with a diameter of 31mm. Each jointed link is connected to a rein link via a 34mm long joining bar, which is square in section with a thickness of 8mm. The total length of the snaffle when straight measures 137mm. The snaffle bit has a dull brown patina with patches of light green corrosion on the surface. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 100 | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | Laura McLean | Identifier: | http://www.finds.org.uk/database/artefac... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | text/html | Go to resource |
