Description: | Three fragments of a damaged Kentish silver-gilt keystone garnet disc brooch of Early Early-Medieval, sixth century (AD 500 - AD 600). Treasure case no. 2005 T327. Maximum diameter 21mm. Weight 3.96g. The largest fragment represents a substantial part of the brooch, with two complete keystone settings with garnets on waffle-patterned metal foils; the third setting is partly broken and empty. A central, round setting, now empty, contains remains of presumably some white inlay and green corrosion products. The back of this part retains part of the needle holder. The fields between the keystone garnets, abutting the central roundel, are decorated with disjointed Style I ornament. The second fragment has the broken pin catch on the back and one part of the broken garnet setting on the front. A keystone garnet with wafered gold foil still stuck to its back is the third fragment. The front of the brooch was originally gilt, but the gilding has rubbed off in particular on the frames of the garnet cells. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the fragmentary mercury-gilt brooch, indicated a silver content of approximately 88%. The red stones were identified by Raman spectroscopy as garnet. Dimensions: Large fragment: Max. diam. 2.1cm; max height incl. needle holder 0.7cm Smaller fragment: Max. L 0.9cm; max height incl. pin catch 0.5cm Loose garnet: Max 0.4 x 0.4
The ornament characterises this brooch as part of Avent's Class 2 (R. Avent, Anglo-Saxon disc and composite brooches. BAR Brit. Series 11 i+ii, Oxford 1975). Due to its fragmentary state it is difficult to ascertain the sub-group, but it is probably 2.3. rather than 2.4. Avent lists another three brooches, all from Kent (corpus nos. 44-46). None of these, nor the brooches in sub-group 2.4, were associated with any datable finds. The type generally belongs to the 6th century.
Another Class 2 find of 6th-century date was reported from Lympne, Kent, as Treasure case no. 2001 T34. Arnold (The Anglo-Saxon Cemeteries of the Isle of Wight, London 1982) published a Class 2.2 keystone garnet brooch from Chessel Down gr. 45 (fig 13.45xiiipl 2, i).This report has been prepared by: Sonja Marzinzik Curator of Insular Early Medieval Collections Department of Prehistory and Europe The British Museum | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 500
