Description: | A fragment of a copper-alloy spur of medieval to post-medieval date. A similar piece is illustrated in Brian Read's "Metal Aretfacts of Antiquity" (2001; pp. 65) and a date of post 1640 is suggested; however, the reasoning for this date is unclear and it is worth noting that the form of the terminal is similar to London Museum type Bii (1967; pp.95), which was in use on prick spurs of the 11th to mid 14th centuries.
The small surviving portion of the arm is of semi-circular section and this gives way to a double-looped terminal. Situated within each loop is a hooked attachment. One of these consists of a flat plate with a wide top edge and a waisted central section which extends smoothly into a bulbous lower section. The widest part is at the bottom, where there is a horizontal rectangular portion, containing a central rivet and attached iron corrosion. The other hooked attachment has a tongue-shaped plate with a small circular hole in one of its vertical outer edges; a circular-section shaft protrudes downwards on the underside of this plate and, set at right angles to it, is a drop-shaped attachment, probably made from a lead-tin alloy.
The object measures 29.7mm long, 20.5mm high and 9.2mm thick.
