Description: | Cast copper alloy seal matrix of thirteenth to fourteenth century date. The seal matrix is vesica-shaped (oval with pointed ends) and sub-rectangular in cross section. It measures 28.5mm in length, 20mm in width, it is 2.7mm thick and weighs 7.23g. The rear of the matrix has the ghost of a vertical cast rib that presumably would have terminated in a small perforated projection or lug on its upper point, for suspension.
The front face of the matrix consists of a central forward-facing bust with an inscription reading anti-clockwise (clockwise in the impression) around the edge. The inscription reads: + SECRETA ROGEDRI TECE (I hold the secret of Roger). This inscription is formed from regular well-cut letters. The seal matrix is unusual in so much as inscriptions of the form 'SECRETI' or 'TECE' do not tend to refer to a personal name. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1200
