Description: | Medieval copper alloy circular seal matrix with a hexagonal handle ending in a loop. It stands 19.2mm high and the matrix is 18.5mm in diameter. It weighs 5.58g.
At the centre of the matrix is a, somewhat crude, lamb and flag around which is the inscription *AGNUS DEI. A beaded border bounds top and bottom of the inscription.
Seal matrices bearing the 'lamb and flag' motif were popular in the 14th century, often with the inscription ECCE AGNUS (Behold the Lamb (of God)). There are six of this type in the British Museum (Tonnochy, A. B. 1952. Catalogue of British Seal-Dies in the British Museum, page 194, ref. 900-905) and three in the Public Record Office. Site finds include examples from Salisbury and Carmarthen Priory (Saunders, P. and Saunders, E. 1991. Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue, Part 1, page 32, ref. 13; Williams, D. 1982. Welsh History through Seals, page 13, no. 22). Cf also an example from Thorpe le Soken, Essex, ESS-649178.
The 1330s were probably the most popular time for this seal, Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue Part 1, Saunders & Saunders, 1991, p.32 no.13 . | Format: | text/html | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ | Publisher: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Rights holder: | The Portable Antiquities Scheme | Subjects: | archaeology | Temporal: | 1301
