Description: | Eleven bronze objects were discovered by the finder on 4th January 2006 using a metal detector on arable land. These objects (catalogue nos. 48-58) were removed by the finder and the landowner, but other visible objects were left in situ. The Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service were notified of the discovery and an excavation of the findspot was undertaken under controlled archaeological conditions on 5th January 2006.An area of ploughsoil measuring c.1m by c.1m was cleared around the find-spot and associated feature down to the surface of the naturally occurring clay subsoil which was encountered at a depth of c.0.2m. A small oval pit, measuring c.0.4m from north-west to south-east and c.0.25 m from south-east to north-west was discovered. Subsequent excavation revealed a depth of 0.18 m for the pit which had been disturbed on its northern side, either by recent ploughing or during the manual excavation by the detectorist. At the interface between the pit fill and pit sides a very thin layer of dark brown material was present, which was interpreted as the remains of a container or layer of organic material that would have protected the metal objects. Measured plans were drawn of the feature and a photographic record was made at all stages of the excavation recording the relative positions of the individually numbered objects in the ground.DescriptionWeights were taken before conservation and include soil still adhering to the surfaces and the insides of socketed artefacts.4.
