German First World War large format portrait medal (in iron) by Fritz Eue commemorating Chancellor Theobald von
Bethmann-Hollweg (1856-1921), one in a large series of patriotic medallic tributes to German statesmen and military commanders produced by
the artist during the war. Bethman-Hollweg was appointed Chancellor in 1909 and served until 1917. An opponent of unrestricted submarine
warfare, fearing the involvement of the USA, he was ultimately forced out of office in July 1917 by threats of resignation on the part of
Hindenburg and Ludendorff. The medal specifically celebrates the German declaration of war against Russia on 1 August
1914. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Germany on Russia & 1/8/1914 First World War & Declaration of War Theobald von portrait / personification commemorative Bethmann-Hollweg | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Ball's of Berlin | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
