First World War large format portrait medal (in cast iron) by Fritz Eue commemorating Karl Theodor Helfferich (1872-
1924). Helfferich, a successful academic and writer on monetary policy was appointed German Minister of Finance in 1915. In May of the
following year he became Minister of the Interior and Vice-Chancellor. This medal specifically commemorates a speech in the Reichstag made
by Helfferich as Minister of Finance on 14 December 1915 during which he made the defiant utterance recorded on the obverse, translated as
'Rather starvation than submission'.
