First World War British medal by A Bertram Pegram commemorating, in no uncertain terms, a British naval victory at the
Battle of Jutland on 31 May - 1 June 1916. The piece, in silver, was awarded the second prize in a competition instituted by Sir Arthur
Evans FSA, then President of the Royal Numismatic Society, for a medal to commemorate the Battle of Jutland. Sir Arthur, showing a fine
appreciation of the value of positive propaganda, sought to wrest the initiative in this field of activity from the more active German
medallists. He also saw the competition as an opportunity to reject what he viewed as decadent practices in the medallic arts and re-
validate the more traditional forms and standards of skilled medal production with the emphasis on artistic simplicity, boldness of relief
and finish and precision in modelling. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Battle of & 31/5/1916 = 1/6/1916 Royal Navy North Sea & Jutland commemorative First World War propaganda | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Pegram, A Bertram | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
