This conventional First World War portrait tribute to the German artillery general (and hero of Tannenberg) Fritz von
Scholtz is attributed to Hans Lindl, though the famous Amsterdam-based medal dealer J Schulman identified it as the work of 'A Habich'. In
this connection it is worth pointing out the presence of the 'HL' monogram at the left base of bust (truncation) on obverse and in the
exergue of the reverse. As well as acknowledging the technical expertise and success of von Scholtz the piece commemorates in a more
general sense German and Austro-Hungarian victories in East Prussia, Poland and Russia during the period 1914-1915. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | DE.A Scholtz portrait / personification Fritz von commemorative Artillery Eastern Front & 1914 = 1915 First World War | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Lindl, Hans | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
