First World War portrait medal by Arnold Hartig commemorating Feldmarschall Archduke Friedrich (1856-1936), one in a
series of patriotic medallic tributes to senior Austro-Hungarian political and military figures produced by the artist during the war.
Although Commander in Chief of the Austro-Hungarian Army between 1914-1916, Friedrich in effect often deferred to his Chief of Staff,
Conrad von Hotzendorf on major matters of policy and strategy. He was removed from command in February 1917 (never having won the support
of the new Emperor Karl I) and retired from the Army in November 1918. The reverse text is translated as 'To the Commander-in-Chief of our
victorious armies'.
