A First World War German medallic tribute to Generaloberst Alexander von Kluck (1846-1934), commander of the First
German Army in 1914. His Army, on the extreme right of the invading German forces, attacked the left flank of the French Army, and aimed to
encircle and capture Paris. This event was widely anticipated as an inevitable consequence by German military planners but was in fact
averted by the successful Allied counter-attack on the Marne (6-9 September 1914). Von Kluck was seriously wounded in the leg in March 1915
and retired from active service in October 1916. The Amsterdam-based medal dealer Schulman attributed this piece to 'M.G(alambos)'
(sic). | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | First World War & 1914 = 1915 1 Alexander von DE.A & Army Kluck portrait / personification | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | A G | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
