First World War patriotic portrait medal by Fritz Eue commemorating General Erich Georg Sebastian von Falkenhayn (1861-
1922). Falkenhayn replaced von Moltke as Head of the German General Staff in September 1914. A strong advocate of the primacy of operations
on the Western Front he conceived the German offensive against Verdun. The failure of the long series of extremely costly attritional
actions (between February and December 1916) together with reverses experienced on the Eastern and Italian Fronts led to Falkenhayn himself
being replaced as Chief of Staff by Hindenburg on 29 August 1916. Falkenhayn was given command of the Ninth Army which was instrumental in
the overunning of Rumania in late 1916. The following year he was sent to Palestine to command the Ottoman forces; he was dismissed in
February 1918 and on his return to Germany retired from active service. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | First World War & 1914 = 1915 Erich von DE.A portrait / personification Falkenhayn | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Ball's of Berlin | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
