German First World War large format portrait medal (in cast iron) by Fritz Eue commemorating King Ludwig III of Bavaria
(1845-1921), one in a series of patriotic medallic tributes to senior German commanders and national figures produced by the artist during
the war. On the death of his father (Prince Luitpold) in 1912, Ludwig became Prince Regent of Bavaria in the place of his insane cousin,
Otto. As a result of a formal constitutional amendment Ludwig replaced Otto as King of Bavaria on 5 November 1913. During the war Ludwig's
son, Prince Rupprecht, became a Field Marshal and army group commander. In November 1918 Ludwig, with his family, fled to Austria as
insurgents under the leadership of Kurt Eisner set up a Bavarian Republic. Ludwig died in exile in Hungary on 18 October
