Medal commemorating Field Marshal Svetozar Boroevic von Bojna (1856-1920), Austro-Hungarian Field Commander - one of a
series of portraits produced by Bachmann during the First World War. An impressive defensive commander (notably in the Carpathians in 1914)
Boroevic von Bojna was less successful in his offensive operations, particularly in the many assaults associated with the Isonzo front.
Despite his poor showing against retreating Italian forces after the battle of Caporetto (October-November 1917) he was made a Field
Marshal in February 1918. He opposed the planned Austrian offensive on the Piave, which eventually resulted in the disintegration of the of
the Austro-Hungarian Army. On his retirement he was the most highly decorated of Austro-Hungarian commanders. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Weapons Italian Front & 1915 = 1917 Svetozar portrait / personification Boroevic von Bojna First World War AH.A | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Bachmann, R | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
