Description: | An extensive collection of personal and official papers relating to Lord Loch's experiences during the First World War, covering his service on the Western Front as GSO2 liaison officer between GHQ BEF and II Corps, August - December 1914; as GSO1 to 28th Division, January - May 1915; as Brigadier General, General Staff VI Corps, May 1915 - July 1917; and then in Ireland on the General Staff, Irish Command, May 1918 - March 1919, from January 1919 serving as Major General; including personal correspondence with his wife and fellow officers, his personal diary, official records including intelligence reports and operation summaries, a ts report on the activities in occupied Belgium of Prince Reginald de Croy, an ms letter describing the experiences of a soldier on board the battleship HMS ST VINCENT during the Battle of Jutland, an album of press cuttings, trench maps and photographs. The collection also comprises documents relating to his service as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard, 1924 and 1929 - 1931, and as Area Commander for Cambridgeshire Home Guard, 1940 - 1942, and includes letters written to Loch by Major General Viscount Allenby, Major General Sir Hugh Bruce-Williams, Field Marshal Viscount Byng, General Sir David Campbell, Sir Winston Churchill (regarding civil defence in the event of a German invasion during the Second World War), Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham, Lord Dalmeny, General Sir Francis Davies, General Sir Charles Deedes, Field Marshal Sir Cyril Deverell, Lieutenant General Sir William Furse, Brigadier John Gawthorpe, Field Marshal Earl Haig, Group Captain John Halahan, General Sir Aylmer Haldane, T Cecil Howitt, Lieutenant General Sir John Keir, Sir David Kelly, Major General H J S Landon, Lieutenant General James Legge, General Sir Archibald Murray, Captain Rupert Ommanney, Major General Sir Harold Ruggles-Brise, General Sir John Shea, General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, General Sir Robert Whigham, and Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson.
