Description: | 12 ms letters written home to his mother while serving as a Private with the 13th Battalion London Regiment (25th Brigade, 8th Division) in the United Kingdom, September 1914, and on the Western Front, January - May 1915, mainly concerned with life back home but referring briefly to conditions in the trenches, comforts provided to the soldiers by their chaplain, receiving parcels from home, the damage caused to French towns by shelling, his billets, and describing his involvement in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915); Johnson was killed in action on 9 May 1915. Also held with the letters are two official forms relating to the separation allowance paid to his mother (AF W3137, September 1915); an official ts letter (1p, 27 May 1919) accompanying his posthumous award of the 1914 Star; an ms letter (2pp, 8 February 1915) from a friend sending him comforts from home; an ms letter (1p, 3 December 1914) from a fellow soldier expressing gratitude for gifts received; and a few related papers including an order of service for a Drumhead Service for the 13th Battalion London Regiment (4pp, 9 August 1914), an 'In Memoriam' order of service (8pp) for the men of the 13th Battalion London Regiment, and two IWGC and Salvation Army printed booklets regarding visits to war cemeteries.
