Description: | Outstanding collection of papers relating principally to the 3rd Battalion, London Regiment, 1911 - 1920, comprising a loose leaf ms diary (94pp) covering his service as a machine gun officer with the 1/3rd Battalion, 2 January - 14 March 1915, and describing his unit's departure from Malta and arrival on the Western Front, their training, service with the Dehra Dun Brigade (Meerut Division) from February 1915, initially in the line near Festubert and then during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March; together with a substantial series of Battalion and operation orders, reports, messages, signals, casualty lists, nominal rolls, sketch maps, intelligence summaries, a Battalion war diary and other documents covering the 1/3rd Battalion's service in England and Malta in 1914 and on the Western Front (with the Dehra Dun Brigade, Meerut Division from February - October 1915, 142nd Brigade, 47th Division from November 1915 - February 1916 and 167th Brigade, 56th Division from February - December 1916) collected mainly during his service as a company and battalion commander, with particular reference to the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Festubert and Loos and operations at Gommecourt and Flers Courcelette during the Battle of the Somme, mobilisation, Army life, trench and gas warfare, as well as documents relating to Colonel, temporary Brigadier General A A Howell.
