An immediate post-First World War Belgian medallic commemoration of two heroines intimately associated with the Belgian
experience of war both of whom died in 1915, Nurse Edith Cavell and Marie Depage. The latter was the wife of Dr Antoine Depage who was
serving with the Belgian Army in the field. She went to America in 1915 to raise funds for Belgium but perished on her return in May, as a
passenger on board the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915. Edith Cavell was executed by the Germans on 12 October 1915 for her role in assisting
British and Fench prisoners of war, and Belgians who wanted to serve with the Allies, escape to neutral Holland. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Edith British transportation & RMS Lusitania Execution of & 12/10/1915 commemorative Cavell Atlantic & RMS Lusitania German Occupied Belgium & Cavell Edith Louisa Depage Marie Sinking of by U20 & 7/5/1915 Naval Operations First World War propaganda | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Fonson and Company | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
