Description: | Microfilm copies of a ts memoir (142pp), written ca 1953, covering his career as a paymaster officer in the Royal Navy from 1887 to the mid 1920s and describing in particular his appointments in the Mediterranean Fleet battleship HMS DREADNOUGHT (1887 - 1888), the Pacific Squadron cruiser HMS AMPHION (1889 - 1891), the battleship HMS RAMILLIES and the despatch vessel HMS SURPRISE on the Mediterranean Station (1895 - 1900), the cruiser HMS BARRACOUTA on the Cape Station (1901 - 1904), the Atlantic Fleet battleship HMS DUNCAN (1906 - 1908), as a Fleet Paymaster in the battle cruiser HMS INFLEXIBLE (1912 - 1916) including the pursuit of the GOEBEN and the BRESLAU in the Mediterranean (August - September 1914), the Battle of the Falkland Islands (December 1914), operations with the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron from February 1915 until she was badly damaged in the attempt to force the Dardanelles on 18 March 1915, and with the Grand Fleet including the Battle of Jutland (June 1915 - late 1916), as Paymaster of Contingencies at the Admiralty (1917 - 1919) and as Paymaster Commander and Fleet Accountant Officer in the battleship HMS IRON DUKE, the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, including the evacuation of White Russians from Black Sea ports (March 1919 - March 1922); and of a ts transcript (73pp) of a detailed diary kept by him in HMS INFLEXIBLE from November 1914 - April 1915. The papers include very interesting assessments of several distinguished officers under whom he served, notably Admirals of the Fleet Lord Fisher of Kilverstone, Prince Louis of Battenberg, Sir Doveton Sturdee, Sir Somerset Gough-Calthorpe and Sir John de Robeck and Admirals Sir Assheton Curzon-Howe, Sir Ernest Troubridge and Sir Richard Phillimore, while they also reflect his life long admiration for the lower deck.
