Description: | Photocopy of an ms diary, in two volumes (212pp and 179pp), covering his service as a junior officer in the light cruiser HMS DORIS (August 1914 - December 1915), which was initially employed on patrol and shipping examination duties in the South West Approaches, but from November 1914 was deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, operating against the Turks off the Palestine coast, in support of the Allied landings at Gallipoli (April - May 1915), on the Smyrna patrol and in bombarding Bulgarian positions on the Salonika front, and then in the cruiser HMS GRAFTON (January - July 1916) off the Dardanelles and in the Aegean on patrol and occasional bombardment duties; together with various original papers, including a few official documents relating to naval operations during the Gallipoli campaign (April 1915 - January 1916), a report by Twigg's brother, an officer in the battleship HMS IRON DUKE, on the Battle of Jutland, an ms letter (2pp) by an engineer officer describing the sinking of the light cruiser HMS VINDICTIVE in Ostend harbour during the raid (May 1918), an ms letter (4pp) written by Twigg from the battleship HMS AGINCOURT describing the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet (November 1918), and some passes relating to his appointment as Naval Control Service Officer, Dunkirk (1939 - 1940) and the evacuation of Allied troops from Cherbourg (June 1940).
