Description: | Ms Midshipman's Journal covering his service in the cruiser HMS RALEIGH, the flagship of the Cape Squadron (January 1889 - October 1890), and in the cruiser HMS CALYPSO, which was principally in Home waters but also made cruises to the West Indies and Norway (December 1890 - November 1891); three ms diaries (42pp, 310pp and 366pp) covering his command of the light cruiser HMS BLONDE (attached to 4th Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet) from October 1914 - March 1916 and of HMS DUBLIN (2nd Light Cruiser Squadron, Grand Fleet) from March - December 1916, with interesting entries relating to the loss of HMS AUDACIOUS, the submarine threat to the Grand Fleet, the monotony of service at Scapa Flow, the destruction of HMS NATAL by an internal explosion, the Battles of the Dogger Bank and Jutland and other operations in the North Sea including the High Seas Fleet's sortie on 19 August 1916, and to Admiral Jellicoe and other flag officers in the Grand Fleet; and a folder of papers (7pp), maps and a photograph concerning the sinking in position of the Nab Tower (September 1920).
