Description: | Ms diary (75pp) covering his service as Captain (D), in HMS SWIFT (4th Destroyer Flotilla, Grand Fleet), July 1914 - February 1915, and describing their duties in protecting the capital ships and their bases against German submarine and mine attack. The diary includes interesting accounts of the submarine scares at Scapa Flow and Cromarty in September and October 1914 and of the Flotilla's rescue of survivors from the cruiser HMS HAWKE in the North Sea (15 - 16 October), while it also reveals the strain that their duties imposed on the destroyers and their crews and the extent to which the U-boat threat came to prey on the minds of the officers and men of the Grand Fleet. With the diary is an ms letter (4pp) from Commodore Tyrwhitt describing the operations of the Harwich Force in December 1914 during the German raid on Scarborough and the RN/RNAS raid on Cuxhaven.
