Description: | Ms letter (4pp) from Lieutenant Commander L R Palmer RN to his brother, ca June 1916, in which Palmer, who was in command of HMS DEFENDER (1st Destroyer Flotilla, Battle Cruiser Fleet), describes his experiences during the Battle of Jutland. After his ship had been disabled by a German shell and her speed reduced to 15 knots, DEFENDER nonetheless took in tow when under heavy fire the severely damaged destroyer HMS ONSLOW and after 48 hours of a "heart breaking job and also dangerous" both ships reached the safety of their base. Palmer, who was awarded the DSO for his gallantry on this occasion, considered that he had enjoyed "a most Providential Escape". Together with photocopies of six flimsies (6pp) covering Commander Palmer's service in the Royal Navy from 4 April 1916 to 18 August 1919, and a photograph of him in uniform (ca 1918 - 1919).
