Description: | Microfilm personal records of his career in the paymaster branch of the Royal Navy, 1908 - 1936, notably an ms journal (44pp) covering his time in France to qualify as a French interpreter (October 1908 - March 1909) and his service as a Clerk in the Home Fleet battle cruiser HMS INVINCIBLE (April - September 1909) and the Home Fleet battleship HMS HINDUSTAN (October 1909 - March 1912); a ts diary (28pp) kept as an Assistant Paymaster in the Home Fleet battleship HMS COLLINGWOOD during her cruise to Mediterranean ports (October - December 1913); two ms diaries (145 and 146pp) covering his service as an Assistant Paymaster on the staff of the Vice Admiral commanding 4th Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet, first in HMS DREADNOUGHT (July - October 1914) and then in HMS BENBOW (January - March 1915) with interesting references to the outbreak of war, submarine alarms at sea and at Scapa Flow and morale and living conditions in the Grand Fleet; microfilm, and additional photocopies, of an official report and two personal letters giving a good account of his service in HMS BENBOW during the Battle of Jutland; extracts from his ts diary (7pp) kept as Paymaster Commander in the China Fleet cruiser HMS CORNWALL at Shanghai during the fighting there between Japan and China (January - April 1932) and similar extracts (10pp) when serving as Paymaster Commander in the Mediterranean Fleet cruiser HMS LONDON at Barcelona during the evacuation of British subjects and refugees at the outset of the Spanish Civil War (July - October 1936)
