Description: | Word processed ts memoir (47pp) recording his service in the Royal Marine Light Infantry during and after the First World War, describing his attempts to enlist (under-age) until accepted by the RMLI in March 1915, his training at Deal in Kent, guard duty against the threat of Zeppelins, further training at Chatham barracks before posting to the battleship HMS PRINCE GEORGE (March - September 1916) as a Thames guard ship where he refers to sentry duty, life onboard ship and the rum ration, naval discipline, attempts to shoot down Zeppelins and the recovery of a downed Zeppelin envelope; service in the battleship HMS HIBERNIA (October 1916 - November 1917) in the North Sea; promotion to the rank of Lance Corporal and his volunteering to join the 4th Battalion RMLI (January 1918) for the Zeebrugge Raid (April 1918), describing the planning of the operation and the intense fighting on the Mole during which he was wounded, his escape back to Dover in the SS IRIS, and the VC ballot held on their return to Deal; service in the cruiser HMS DANAE (5th Light Cruiser Squadron) based on Harwich (June - October 1918); at Chatham Barracks as a Soldier School Assistant (November 1918 - January 1922), referring to the burial of Field Marshal Sir John French, church parades and being posted as an armed guard during an industrial dispute; in the battleships HMS ROYAL OAK (Atlantic Fleet) (January - October 1922) and HMS ROYAL SOVEREIGN (Mediterranean Fleet) (October 1922 - October 1923), referring to shore leave in Constantinople; his promotion to Sergeant and appointment as a Weapons Instructor at Chatham (1924 - 1928) and Malta (1928 - 1930); and finally as CSM at Fort Borstal near Rochester (1931 - 1936).
