Description: | Interesting ms diary covering his service, between April 1915 and March 1917, as a Lieutenant on the Western Front in the 247th (West Riding) Brigade Royal Field Artillery (RFA) (3rd West Riding Brigade, RFA (49th West Riding Division) until May 1916); attachment as 247th Brigade liaison officer, Counter-Battery HQ, 10 Corps, May - July 1916; RA HQ 18 Corps, February 1917; 58th Divisional Artillery, February 1917 and 'A' Battery 291st Brigade, RFA (58th Division) March 1917, describing his day-to-day activities, including his opinion of the Dardanelles campaign and likely duration of the war (28 May 1915), but especially valuable for his account of the Battle of the Somme (covering the period 23 June - 18 November 1916), particularly entries for 1 July, 3 September, 26 September, 1 October (which includes a description of the German trenches) and 22 October; together with documents relating to the technical aspects of artillery and to his unit, miscellaneous newspaper cuttings and a postcard from a prisoner of war in Germany, dated 20 November 1916. The diary was discontinued because of his deteriorating eyesight.
