Review of service as machine gunner with Northamptonshire Yeomanry in GB and on Western Front, 10/1914-3/1917. Background to recruitment as gunner with Royal Flying Corps, 3/1917, and expectation of training in GB. Period as NCO gunner flying in FE2 B and Bristol Fighter with 22 Sqdn, RFC at Chippily, France, 3/1917-1/1918: view of Nieuport crash landing whilst stunting above airfield; reception, kitting out and reaction to absence of further training; question of unofficial logging of air hours in notebooks; question of training as pilot after 50 hours and differential treatment of officer and NCO observer/gunners; reaction to first test flight and shooting at ground target in FE2 B; story of first patrol and success in shooting down German Albatross; subsequent success in aerial combat and award of MM; re-equipment with Bristol Fighter; question of official recognition of score of German aircraft shot down. Return for flying training in GB, 1918.
