Description: | Ts memoir (277pp), written in 1935, of a Glasgow office clerk covering his enlistment and training in the Benbow Battalion Royal Naval Division in the United Kingdom (November 1914 - April 1915), his service as an able seaman in the Drake Battalion RND on the Cape Helles front, Gallipoli, up to its final evacuation (June 1915 - January 1916) and on garrison duty in the Aegean Islands (January - April 1916); and then on the Western Front as a clerk at the headquarters of the 188th Brigade RND (June - November 1916) and of the 189th Brigade RND (December 1916 - November 1917); and finally under training with an Officer Cadet Battalion in Ayrshire (January - October 1918) and as a sulbaltern with the 2nd Reserve Battalion RNVR at Aldershot (November - December 1918). The memoir contains interesting references to conditions in the trenches at Gallipoli, the RND's part in the Battles of the Ancre, Arras and 3rd Ypres, the execution of a junior RND officer for cowardice, the gallantry of the Hon Arthur Asquith (the Prime Minister's son) and the fighting soldier's dislike of all classes of men. Held with the memoir are some 1955 - 1968 letters relating to Macmillan's service during the First World War.
