Description: | Microfilm copy of extracts from his ts memoir (pp 29 - 76), written ca 1965, and photocopies of two undated ts articles (6pp and 14pp) covering his enlistment in the Royal Navy at the age of fourteen and his training in the boys' training establishment HMS IMPREGNABLE (1914 - 1916), his service as a rating in the battleship HMS MARLBOROUGH in the Grand Fleet, including an account of the destruction by internal explosion of HMS VANGUARD at Scapa Flow (1916 - 1918), and then with the Allied naval force enforcing the Armistice with Turkey and evacuating White Russians, including the Dowager Empress and the Grand Duke Nicholas, from the Black Sea ports (1919 - 1920) and in the Atlantic Fleet destroyer HMS SALMON in Irish waters on duties in support of the civil power (1921 - 1922), his qualification as a leading torpedo operator and service in the cruiser HMS DURBAN on the China Station including a spell of detached duty in the river gunboat HMS MANTIS on the Yangtse River (1923 - 1925), and his decision to volunteer for the submarine service and subsequent service in the submarines HMS L6, L11 and L12 (1925 - 1930).
