Description: | A microfilm of his papers (his paybook (5pp) as a private in the ASC, September 1914 - February 1915; his Pilot's Flying Log (78pp), October 1915 - March 1917; his 85 ms letters written to his mother, September 1914 - January 1917; and a ts memoir (253pp) of his life, May 1893 - March 1917, privately published by his mother in 1918 quoting his letters and diary, April 1915 - March 1917, but omitting any reference to his girlfriend, Winifred Martin Smith, of whom his mother disapproved) recording his service in the ASC and the RFC, September 1914 - March 1917, including: his active service as a private with the 69th MT Company ASC, Lahore Division, in the UK and France, September 1914 - February 1915; as an officer with the 4th Divisional Supply Column, February 1915 - August 1915, when he transferred to the RFC; as an observer flying with Major Robert Loraine, commander of 'B' Flight, No 5 Squadron RFC, October 1915 - January 1916, notably how they shot down an Albatros, October 1915, for which they were both awarded the MC and the moving last letter, November 1915, which was sent to his mother when he was killed; his flying training with No 3 Reserve Squadron RFC in the UK, February - April 1916; flying the Sopwith Two-seater and commanding 'B' Flight of No 45 Squadron RFC in France, April 1916 - March 1917, when he was shot down and killed; and commenting on aerial encounters with the Germans; his experiences; the conditions; British and German behaviour towards the local inhabitants; and his relationship with his girlfriend. Also included are photocopies of his flying log book (40pp), his 3 letters of October - November 1915 (14pp), and five photographs (3 of him in uniform, 1 of his mother, and 1 of his girlfriend).
