Description: | Two ms diaries covering his service with the Royal Navy, the first (263pp, December 1913 - August 1915) giving descriptions of his training at the Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth (January - May 1914), joining the cruiser HMS ROYAL ARTHUR, including the royal review at Spithead (July 1914), joining the cruiser HMS ENDYMION at Plymouth (August 1914) sailing to join the 10th Cruiser Squadron at Scapa Flow, with details of patrols between the north of Scotland and the Faroes, capturing and sinking German trawlers, appointment as second in command of HMS CHANGUINOLA a converted armed merchant cruiser (November 1914), joining the 10th Cruiser Squadron (January - June 1915), appointment to a squadron of six paddle minesweepers (June 1915), transferring to HMS JUNIOR (July 1915) with details of minesweeping, the second diary (53pp, August 1915 - January 1916), continues with details of the minesweeping and ends after HMS JUNIOR had been ordered to Aberdeen for a refit. The diaries also mention his pleasure that his younger brother had opted to serve in the TA rather than return to school, and his unwillingness to attend church when on leave as he disliked being stared at in his uniform.
