Description: | Ts account of his service in the Royal Navy (1903 - 1922) describing his training as a cadet in HMS BRITANNIA; his appointments to the cruiser HMS GRAFTON, the flagship of the Pacific Squadron (September 1904 - 1905); the battleship HMS KING EDWARD VII, the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet based on Gibraltar and Berehaven (1905 - 1907); and the battleships HMS VENERABLE and HMS PRINCE OF WALES in the Mediterranean Fleet; his service in the cruiser HMS ACHILLES to obtain his watch-keeping certificate and then in the battleship HMS LONDON (1910 - 1911); the cruiser HMS MONMOUTH on the China Station where he witnessed the beginning of the 'Second Revolution' in China (July 1913); the destroyer HMS LIVELY which was based on Devonport until the outbreak of war when she joined the 7th Destroyer Flotilla for patrol duties in the North Sea, coming under fire during the German raid on Great Yarmouth, and later joining the Grand Fleet in Scapa Flow (1914 - August 1915); the destroyer HMS GURKHA; and the minesweeper HMS GENTIAN which was attached to the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow where he witnessed the loss of HMS VANGUARD (1916 - 1917); in command, in HMS TOTNES, of a flotilla of paddle-minesweepers based on Oban, Scotland and then as Mine Clearance Officer for the Belgian Coast when he served under Captain E R G R Evans (1919 - 1920); and finally in HMS TRURO, a minesweeper based on Portland for fishery protection duties and later on Queenstown where he helped to maintain the coastguard stations and lighthouses during the Irish troubles.
