Description: | 9163 A.SJT. W. NASH. 1/R.SCOTS:FUS.
First World War Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded to (9163) Segeant William Nash (1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers). Medal citation: Supplement to the London Gazette, 6 September 1915, Issue 29286, p.8860. 'For conspicuous gallantry on the 16th June, 1915, east of Ypres. After the attack by the Ninth Brigade, when our troops retired from the 2nd line of German trenches which they had captured, Serjeant Nash was the last man to retire. He remained in a demolished communication trench with an Officer of another Battalion, who was wounded and unable to move, and then rallied some of the men who had retired, getting them to open fire from the communication trench in order to make the enemy think that the section of the trench just vacated was still occupied. In doing this, he had to pass repeatedly up and down the ruined communication trench with less than 3 feet of cover and exposed to close rifle and machine-gun fire.'
William Nash, later Warrant Officer Class 2, killed in action.
