First World War period DCM awarded to Sergeant J Aiken, 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
Medal citation: (London Gazette, 30 April 1918, Issue 30664, p.5290) '3/5959 C./S./M. J. Aiken, D.C.L.I. (Devonport). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack he was always in advance of his company, and led the Tanks through the enemy first line and on to his main defensive position. Personally accounting for several of the enemy, he, on arrival at his company's objective, immediately organised a pursuit. His example was of great value, and he set a standard of dash and initiative which did much to carry through the attack.'
Biographical note (recipient): in his long British Army service career (which included involvement in the war in South Africa (Second Boer War, 1899-1902) Company Sergeant Major John Aiken DCM served variously in: the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, the Dorset Regiment, the Royal Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry.
