First World War Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded to (15644) Sergeant A H Luffrum (49th Company, Machine Gun Corps).
Medal citation: (Supplement to The London Gazette of 3 October 1918, p.11675): 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When three guns had been put out of action he continued to fire his one remaining gun, protected on the flanks only by the sniping of his officer and one private. He covered the withdrawal of other troops, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy, including three large machine-gun teams.'
Biographical note (recipient): Alfred Luffrum (21 April (?)1898 - December 1957 was born in Brentford, Middlesex, the son of a Coal Merchant. He is believed to have worked on the Great Western Railway before enlisting, possibly in the Middlesex Regiment. He was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. His service details cannot be confirmed since his are amongst the PRO 'Burned' Records.
