image: a half length portrait of General Sir William Robertson wearing uniform.
Sir William Robertson (1860 - 1933) was the first British soldier to rise from the lowest rank of Private to the
highest, Field Marshal. At the time of this portrait in January 1918, Robertson was serving as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS),
an important role in the strategic approach of the British Army in the First World War that he had been appointed to in December 1915.
Robertson resigned this role in February 1918 as his committment to the Western Front as the focus of the British war effort was at odds
with the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, who favoured turning attention to other theatres until the arrival of sufficient US
troops.
