First World War portrait medal by Arnold Hartig commemorating the death, on 21 November 1916, of Emperor Franz Josef I,
one in a series of patriotic medallic tributes to senior Austro-Hungarian political and military figures produced by the artist during the
war. Franz Josef I (1830-1916) remained popular with his Imperial subjects to the end of his life. Though weakened by illness in his last
years he remained diligent in matters of state. He reigned in full sovereignty for 66 years (1848-1916), a longer period than any other
European monarch, and was succeeded by his great nephew, Emperor Karl I. The reverse text is translated 'Farewell old
Emperor'. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Emperor portrait / personification Franz Josef I commemorative Death of & 21/11/1916 Austro-Hungarian Home Front & Franz Josef I of Austria-Hungary | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Hartig, Arnold | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
