During September 1914 the northern French city of Rheims was heavily shelled by German artillery. The main target was
Rheims’ gothic cathedral, built on the historical coronation site of the Kings of France. The French Government, outraged, issued an
official protest, stating that the cathedral was being used as a hospital and had a Red Cross flag hung from its tower. Germany, in
response, justified the bombardment claiming the cathedral tower was being used for observation by the French army. Although the tracery,
towers, and nave were severely damaged the walls remained intact and the cathedral was gradually restored after the war.
